About Lafayette College

Lafayette College is a private coeducational liberal arts and engineering college located in Easton, which is the county seat of Northampton County, in the US state of Pennsylvania, with a population estimated at a number of more than 26 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. It is the easternmost city of the Lehigh Valley, sitting on the confluence of the Delaware River and the Lehigh River, for which the Lehigh Valley is named, also being the smallest of the three Lehigh Valley cities, with approximately one-fourth of the population of the largest Lehigh Valley city, Allentown.

 

Lafayette College was founded in 1826, by the citizens of Easton, but the first classes were not held until 1832. Since then, Lafayette College grew, having today a student body which consists of more thn 2300 undergraduate students from 37 U.S. States and 57 countries, offering 45 different Majors across four academic divisions: natural sciences, humanities, engineering, and social sciences, most of its department offering minors, including 12 interdisciplinary minors.

 

Over the years, Lafayette College has been highly ranked by various significant publications, for many of its educational programs, including by U.S. News & World Report, which ranked Lafayette 35th out of all liberal arts colleges in the nation, in a 2010 edition, and Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine, which ranked it 14th among liberal arts colleges.

 

Athletics

Lafayette's athletic teams are known as the Leopards, who compete in 23 sports, in the NCAA Division I, being perhaps, best known for their achievements in football, in which they made three consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division I-AA football tournament, and for their men's basketball team, which made 2 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances,in 1999 and 2000.

Moskow - CEO and President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, William F. Durand - mechanical engineer and first civilian chair of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, Don Lancasterauthor - inventor, and microcomputer pioneer, Brent Glass - director of Smithsonian National Museum of American History and Haldan K. Hartline - winner of Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1967, among many others.
